Mingle Media TV and Red Carpet Report host, Stephanie Garrett, were invited to come out to the 2012 Los Angeles Film Festival Screening and Red Carpet for Ava DuVernay’s “Middle of Nowhere.”
We got to see Angela Bassett (who did not stop to talk to us) but we did get to interview some great iconic entertainers including CCH Pounder and Louis Gossett Jr..
The film was written by entertainment publicist Ava DuVernay who began writing the screenplay which was set in her hometown of Compton, California in 2002. The casting process came together quickly and found the lead actress, Emayatzy Corinealdi, through the audition process. DuVernay had worked with actor Omari Hardwick (For Colored Girls) and knew she wanted him to play “Derek” opposite “Ruby” as the incarcerated husband.
Middle of Nowhere features veteran actors like Lorraine Toussaint, Sharon Lawrence and Dondre Whitfield who strengthen the cast of emerging talent including Edwina Findley, Troy Curvey, Maya Gilbert and Nehemiah Sutton.
Shooting started in June 2001 after DuVernay’s producing partner, Howard Barish, of Kandoo Films brought together the financial resources in three short months. If the music sounds familiar it is because hot Los Angeles deejay Morgan Rhodes (KPFK-FM) curated the soundtrack, bringing in Black Indie Soul artists such as Me’shell Ndegeocello, Goapele, Fink, Ra-Re Valverde and more.

Middle of Nowhere was also a 2012 Official Sundance Selection and winner of the Directing Award in the Dramatic Competition. This was 1 of only 4 gala screening events this year at the festival and the house was packed at LA Live’s Regal Cinemas 800–seat auditorium. The movie will be released to the general public in October 2012.
