We meet many people in life, some inspire us and some we inspire. Last week we spoke with Hilary Decesare, who will be on Secret Millionaire this Sunday, July 8th on ABC. She inspired us (and we had to reach for our box of tissues more than once during the interview).
Hilary is the CEO/co-founder of Everloop.com, the leading safe social media site for kids (and parents). It’s designed for the 13 and under crowd giving them a way to connect with friends and express their creativity without fear of bullying, inappropriate conversations or stalkers. Hilary is also recognized as an expert in child and parent safety online, and was invited to The White House Conference on Bullying Prevention in 2011 and to teach kids about Internet safety through Tweenangels, a division of WiredSafety.
Shortly after starting Everloop.com Hilary launched EverGive to support charities devoted to youth and she also serves on the board of directors for the Max Cure Foundation, dedicated to finding medical cures that save children’s lives.
It was while Hilary was at Max Cure Foundation that she realized she was great at “writing checks” but when the ABC TV show Secret Millionaires contacted her, she realized she needed to do more and volunteered for an episode.
That’s when it got real. She left her family – the safety and comfort of her home and her children and found herself in a welfare level, rundown apartment in Long Beach California. During that time, Hilary secretly volunteered and worked with three different groups from young to old and was on a mission to find the people who were making daily sacrifices to help those in need – even though they didn’t have what she had – not even close.
As I spoke with Hilary, we shared some very common experiences from who inspired us to be “givers” and what she learned during this process. As I listened to Hilary, my heart broke as I too know people who work tirelessly all the time to help those in need like Mark Horvath from Invisible People, going from being homeless to helping the homeless full-time. Hillary kept a daily journal about her experience and reflected every moment about how fortunate she was not only to experience this but to be in a position to help beyond what others could do.
“It makes all of your problems feel small.” Hilary Decesare
We encourage you to tune in and meet Hilary on the Secret Millionaires TV show on ABC Sunday night. She will inspire you to be courageous, to go out and help those who need an ear, a hot meal or just someone to help out.
Things to remember – it’s okay to be afraid to do it and it’s okay to not know what you should do. But, you don’t have to spend money to do good and Hilary guarantees that you will feel good, get stronger and you will keep doing it… and so do we!
