Hulu released new character posters for their new drama The Handmaid’s Tale today. After launching the first three episodes of the series, Hulu isn’t holding back on their advertisement of the story of the dystopian nightmare that is called Gilead.

Adapted from Margaret Atwood’s classic novel, The Handmaid’s Tale tells the story of Gilead, the newly christened country in the Northeast of what is left of the United States. The country is now in a totalitarian rule with the return of “traditional and conservative values”. Due to the declining birth rates, women who are deemed fertile are stripped of their humanity and are forced to become “surrogates” (or as our government would like to call them: “hosts”) to the elite.

The series theme can be heavy and dark, which is why it should not be binged altogether. Like the series, the posters below accurately emphasizes the terror in the story with just the simple words written across their disheartened faces.

Watch the The Handmaid’s Tale with the first 3 episodes streaming on Hulu April 26, 2017 and the rest available each week on Wednesdays

About The Handmaid’s Tale

Adapted from the classic novel by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale is the story of life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalism in its militarized ‘return to traditional values’. As one of the few remaining fertile women, Offred (Elisabeth Moss) is a Handmaid in the Commander’s household, one of the caste of women forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate the world. In this terrifying society, Offred must navigate between Commanders, their cruel Wives, domestic Marthas, and her fellow Handmaids – where anyone could be a spy for Gilead – all with one goal: to survive and find the daughter that was taken from her.
