Today, on the morning of the 75th Annual Golden Globes, the air is filled with anticipation as to what this year will hold when it comes to equality and representation. That also held true for the panel room at the CW portion of the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour at the Langham Huntington in Pasadena, California. Though the day ended early, the two panels for the two new series proved to pack a punch.

First, we have to talk about how much happiness the Black Lightning cast and crew brought by having mimicked lightning and roaring thunder kick off the presentation. The CW’s first African American lead superhero will be unrolling the secrets of his past to protect his family and his city in this new CW show. Executive Producer, Salim Akil said he wanted to share what he knew, what’s real and that he wanted it to be authentic. He also shared that the writing staff of Black Lightning is predominantly African-American. In our current social climate, it feels as though this cast and crew know exactly what to do to make sure everyone is accurately represented. Executive Producer Mara Brock Akil added this show is “vision-led” which proves this really is a passion project for everyone involved. Cress Williams, who plays Black Lightning, chuckled when he said: “I was ecstatic!” (pun intended) when talking about getting the part. Marvin ‘Krondon’ Jones III, Tobias Whale, shared that “everybody embodies their character” and that it was “the most real thing (he’s) ever worked on.” Being put in the same category as Luke Cage and Black Panther, this new CW series will be one to keep an eye on. Black Lightning premieres on January 16th!

Lastly, Pretty Little Liar fans will be happy to know that Lucy Hale is returning to network television in Life Sentence a new series that’s part romantic comedy and part family drama. When Stella, (Hale) gets told her cancer is cured, she must figure out how to live. Lucy said it best when describing that her character, Stella, “got used to living life like she was dying and now she’s learning to live life like she’s living”. We get a look into what happens when someone is sick and how it affects everyone around them. However, we also see just how much information is hidden from that person as they’re battling their sickness and what happens when they get better. Executive Producer, Erin Cardillo shared that when her dad was battling cancer, her family hid a lot from him that when he got a clean bill of health he was surprised by how much he had missed. The casting is something that needs to be celebrated as Lucy Hale and Brooke Lyons, who play sisters in the show look very similar and both have “creepy doll eyes”, which was a note in one of the scripts. This series is being described as an “optimistic family show” and that sounds to be exactly what we all need right now. Catch Life Sentence on the CW Network on March 7 at 9/8c after Riverdale!

If you’re craving more CW shows, we’ve got you covered. iZombie returns Monday, February 26 at 9/8c. The Originals are back for their final season Friday, April 20 at 9/8c. The 100 returns Tuesday, April 24 at 9/8c. Dynasty will be moving to Fridays at 8/7c starting March 9.

Other CW news fans will appreciate? Rosario Dawson will be featured in a multi-episode arc on Jane the Virgin. Supernatural will continue as long as the ratings hold and the “boys”, Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, want to do it.
